Winemaking in Le Marche is built on a long and rich history of viticulture.

Le Marche today presents a dynamic and expanding sector in the world of wines, shaped by its distinctive topography, varied cultural influences and a vibrant contemporary energy.

Marcanteca brings the story of Le Marche wine into one place: its breadth, people, terroir, innovation and history. We provide modern, thoughtful encounters across relaxed, in-depth and premium experiences, driven by a focus on quality and collaboration.

Taste with us

Le Marche’s terroir is beautifully diverse.

The region stretches from the Adriatic Coast on its eastern border to the Appennine Mountains (the central ‘spine’ of Italy) on its west, connected by a landscape of rolling hills. Soils are abundant, ranging from saline vineyards on steep coastal cliffs, to mineral-rich and chalky soils inland.

Together with different climates and microclimates, these conditions offer ample opportunity for winemaking. The region grows white and red grapes in about equal measure, and wines span almost every style across dry, sweet, still, sparkling, fortified and oxidised.

The Shop

No single voice defines Le Marche’s wine.

Wine from Le Marche features a wealth of different grape varieties - from popular native vines like Verdicchio, Sangiovese and Montepulciano, to unusual authochthonous grapes and much-loved international varieties. Some are grown across the region, but rarer grapes are specific to certain areas and vinified by only a handful of producers in restricted quantities.

Incredible plurality among the region’s producers creates an energetic scene: from town to town and vineyard to vineyard, no two wines are the same. Local wine culture is characterised by a group of passionate and discerning winemakers, often small family businesses, making responsible choices that champion quality and longevity.

Le Marche now has fifteen DOC and five DOCG classifications, which are fast rising in the ranks of global classified wines. Exciting wine is often made under the territorial label ‘IGT Marche’ – a division establishing itself as a standout niche. IGT wines operate outside of strict classification rules, allowing for experimental approaches and contemporary wines that reflect the voices of Le Marche’s younger generations of producers.

Verdicchio is the most widely planted white grape in Le Marche, and the region was perhaps once known for its iconic amphora-shaped bottle released by Fazi Battaglia in the 1950s. But, today, things are different.

Le Marche produces wines you’ll rarely find outside of the region, made from Lacrima, Biancame, Maceratino, Marche Bordó, Aleatico and Gallioppo, to name just a few local grape varieties. But high-quality Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (brought to the region by Napoleon Bonaparte!), Riesling, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc wines – with a distinctive Le Marche flavour – are also here to stay, both as mono-varietals and in innovative blends.

This dynamic energy coupled with the region’s focus on quality is redefining Le Marche in the landscape of Italian and international wine. Visit Marcanteca or get in touch to become a part of this story.
